- USCG-approved life jacket also known as Personal Flotation Device Type I, II, III, or appropriate Type V life jacket (required by regulation) Note: Belt pouch-type inflatable PFDs must be worn on the person to meet the life jacket regulation.
- Whistle or sound-producing device (required by regulation; best if attached to your life jacket)
- Light (After sunset one is required by regulation to use as a visual distress signal and navigation light.)
- Paddle-board coil leash, attached to the rear of the board and to persons’ ankle or waist
- Proper footwear (sandals, water shoes) for use when launching, etc.
- Hat & UV eye protection (sun-hat, sunglasses)
- Sunscreen/zinc
- Drinking water and snacks
- Dry bag with spare clothing and towel
- Small first aid kit in a waterproof bag
- Compass for navigation
- Cell phone with appropriate case or waterproof camera
- VHF Radio, GPS or PLB device
